There are two Ripenings -
One - of Sight - whose Forces spheric wind
Until the Velvet Product
Drop, spicy, to the Ground -

A Homelier - maturing -
A Process in the Bur -
That Teeth of Frosts, alone disclose -
On far October Air -

ふた通りの実りかた −
目に − 見えるのは − 力を球状にむすび
やがてビロードの成果が
すとんと，香る，土のうえ −

地味な − 熟しかた −
経過はいがに包み −
こじ開けるのは，霜の歯だけ −

The first Day's Night had come -
And grateful that a thing
So terrible - had been endured -
I told my Soul to sing -

She said her strings were snapt -
Her Bow - to atoms blown -
And so to mend her - gave me work
Until another Morn -

And then - a Day as huge
As Yesterdays in pairs,
Unrolled it's horror in my face -
Until it blocked my eyes -

My Brain - begun to laugh -
I mumbled - like a fool -
And tho' 'tis Years ago - that Day -
My Brain keeps giggling - still.

And Something's odd - within -
That person that I was -
And this One - do not feel the same -
Could it be Madness - this?

こころは弦が切れたと言った −
弓は − 粉々に砕けて −
だから直すのに − 手間がかかり
次の朝が来た −

明くる日は − 昨日の
二日分の巨きさで，
恐怖を目の前に繰り広げた −
もうほかに何も見えない −

頭が − わらいだして −
ばかみたいに − 口ごもり −
その日は − 何年も前なのに −
まだ − くすくすとわらっている．

中が − 何だかおかしくて −
昔わたしだった人と −
今のこれが − 同じと思えず −

'Twas like a Maelstrom, with a notch,
That nearer, every Day,
Kept narrowing it's boiling Wheel
Until the Agony

Toyed coolly with the final inch
Of your delirious Hem -
And you dropt, lost,
When something broke -
And let you from a Dream -

As if a Goblin with a Guage -
Kept measuring the Hours -
Until you felt your Second
Weigh, helpless, in his Paws -

And not a Sinew - stirred - could help,
And Sense was setting numb -
When God - remembered - and the Fiend
Let go, then, Overcome -

As if your Sentence stood - pronounced -
And you were frozen led
From Dungeon's luxury of Doubt
To Gibbets, and the Dead -

And when the Film had stitched your eyes
A Creature gasped "Reprieve"!
Which Anguish was the utterest - then -
To perish, or to live?

まるで渦潮が，その刻み目を，
日に日に，近づけて，
煮え立つ輪を狭めていき
ついに苦悶が

目と鼻の距離でもてあそぶ
取り乱した裾 −
お前は，卒倒，
何かが壊れて −
夢から救いだされる −

まるでゴブリンがその計器で −
時間を刻んでいき −
ついにお前の一秒まで
鉤爪が，容易く，捕える −

どこかの腱が − 動いても − 無駄，
感覚は麻痺していく −
その時 − 神が − 思い出し −
悪魔が，離れ，自由の身 −

まるで判決を目の前に − 見て −
凍てついたお前の身体が
不安と戯れた地下室から
さらし台へ，死のもとへ −

両目に膜を縫いつけられる
その時，声が，｢中止！｣
苦しみに比類がないのは − どっち −

A Charm invests a face
Imperfectly beheld -
The Lady dare not lift her Vail -
For fear it be dispelled -

But peers beyond her mesh -
And wishes - and denies -
Lest interview - annul a want -
That Image - satisfies -

ちらりと見ただけの
顔にやどる魅力 −
貴婦人はベールを上げはしない −
力を失わないように −

網の目ごしに見通して −
望んだり − 拒んだり −
面影が掻きてる欲を −

I had been hungry, all the Years -
My Noon had Come - to dine -
I trembling drew the Table near -
And touched the Curious Wine -

'Twas this on Tables I had seen -
When turning, hungry, Home
I looked in Windows, for the Wealth
I could not hope - for Mine -

I did not know the ample Bread -
'Twas so unlike the Crumb
The Birds and I, had often shared
In Nature's - Dining Room -

The Plenty hurt me - 'twas so new -
Myself felt ill - and odd -
As Berry - of a Mountain Bush -
Transplanted - to the Road -

Nor was I hungry - so I found
That Hunger - was a way
Of persons Outside Windows -
The entering - takes away -

お腹を空かせた家路の途中
豊かさを，窓越しに見ようとして

鳥と私で，何度も分けた
自然の − 食堂で −

多いのはつらい − 慣れなくて −
気持ちが悪く − 落ち着かない −
ベリーが − 山の茂みから −
通りに − 植え替えられたよう −

お腹も空かない − 気がついた
空腹を − 感じたのは
窓越しに見ていたから −

It would have starved a Gnat -
To live so small as I -
And yet, I was a living child -
With Food's nescessity

Opon me - like a Claw -
I could no more remove
Than I could coax a Leech away -
Or make a Dragon - move -

Nor like the Gnat - had I -
The privilege to fly
And seek a Dinner for myself -
How mightier He - than I!

Nor like Himself - the Art
Opon the Window Pane
To gad my little Being out -
And not begin - again -

ブヨでも飢えてしまう −
こんな小さな暮らし −
子どもの私も，生きている −
三度の空腹は

ぎゅっと − 鉤爪をたて −
振りほどくのは困難
蛭をおだてて帰したり −
竜を − 動かすより −

ブヨのような − 羽もない −
自由に飛びまわり
自分でご飯を見つけてくる −
私より − たくましい！

あんな芸当も − できない
窓のガラスに向かい
小さないのちをほうり出し −

This was a Poet -
It is That
Distills amazing sense
From Ordinary Meanings -
And Attar so immense

From the familiar species
That perished by the Door -
We wonder it was not Ourselves
Arrested it - before -

Of Pictures, the Discloser -
The Poet - it is He -
Entitles Us - by Contrast -
To ceaseless Poverty -

Of Portion - so unconscious -
The Robbing - could not harm -
Himself - to Him - a Fortune -
Exterior - to Time -

これが詩人 −
その手は
ありふれた言葉から
胸を打つ感覚を −
玄関先で枯れた

見なれた野花から
虹の香油を抽き出す −
私達の手が今の今まで
掴めなかったのは − なぜ −

景色を，炙り出す −
詩人 − その声に −
私達 − 絶え間なく −
貧しさを知る −

天分と − 知りもせず −
盗んでも − 気づかない −
詩人 − それだけで − 資本 −

I died for Beauty - but was scarce
Adjusted in the Tomb
When One who died for Truth, was lain
In an adjoining Room -

He questioned softly "Why I failed"?
"For Beauty", I replied -
"And I - for Truth - Themself are One -
We Bretheren, are", He said -

And so, as Kinsmen, met a Night -
We talked between the Rooms -
Until the Moss had reached our lips -
And covered up - Our names -

美のために死んだ − 墓に寝かされ
おちつく間もなく
真実のために死んだ人が
隣の部屋に, 運ばれた −

｢どうしてここに？｣ と訊かれたので
｢美のために｣ と答えておいた −
｢僕は − 真実のため − ふたつはひとつ −
僕たちはきょうだいだ｣ −

こうして，親類は，夜に出会い −
壁越しに話をつづけた −
苔がふたりの唇を覆い −

The Outer - from the Inner
Derives it's magnitude -
'Tis Duke, or Dwarf, according
As is the central mood -

The fine - unvarying Axis
That regulates the Wheel -
Though Spokes - spin - more conspicuous
And fling a dust - the while.

The Inner - paints the Outer -
The Brush without the Hand -
It's Picture publishes - precise -
As is the inner Brand -

On fine - Arterial Canvas -
A Cheek - perchance a Brow -
The Star's whole secret - in the Lake -
Eyes were not meant to know.

格がにじみ出す −
公爵か，ドワーフか
内心の気分で決まる −

見事な − 不変の軸が
車輪を制御する −
廻る − 輻は − 目を惹いて
埃を − たてるけれど．

内側が − 描く外側 −
絵筆が手も使わずに −
仕上げた絵は − ちょうど −
内側を焼き付けたよう −

繊細な − 動脈のキャンバス −
頬に − あるいは額にも −
星の全貌は − 湖のなか −

I dwell in Possibility -
A fairer House than Prose -
More numerous of Windows -
Superior - for Doors -

Of Chambers as the Cedars -
Impregnable of eye -
And for an everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky -

Of Visitors - the fairest -
For Occupation - This -
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise -

可能性がすみか −
散文より美しい家 −
窓の数もおおく −
扉も − 桁違い −

部屋はヒマラヤ杉で −
目には見通せない −
そして不朽の屋根には
空を張り渡した −

お客には − 一枚の絵 −
これこそが − 天職 −
小さなこの手を大きくひろげ

Because I could not stop for Death -
He kindly stopped for me -
The Carriage held but just Ourselves -
And Immortality.

We slowly drove - He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility -

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess - in the Ring -
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain -
We passed the Setting Sun -

Or rather - He passed Us -
The Dews drew quivering and Chill -
For only Gossamer, my Gown -
My Tippet - only Tulle -

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground -
The Roof was scarcely visible -
The Cornice - in the Ground -

Since then - 'tis Centuries - and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity -

あと不死も．

ゆっくり進んだ − 気長なひとで
私のほうは仕事も遊びも
投げ出してきた，

麦穂の見つめる畑を過ぎた −
沈む太陽を過ぎた −

と言うより − 太陽が，私たちを −
夜露が寒くてふるえた −
ガウンは透けるようで −
スカーフは − 薄絹 −

馬車がとまったのは家のまえ
地面にできたこぶのよう −
屋根は見えるか見えないか −
蛇腹は − 地面のした −

それから − 数世紀 − なのに
昨日のできごとのよう
そんな気がしていた，行き先は

Then covers the Abyss with Trance -
So Memory can step
Around - across - opon it -
As One within a Swoon -
Goes safely - where an open eye -
Would drop Him - Bone by Bone -

奈落を忘我で覆うから −
記憶の足は
一周 − 横断 − 着地 −
夢遊病者の確かさで −
歩く − 目が開いていたら −

That flickered in the night -
When it was dark enough to do
Without erasing sight -

A quiet - Earthquake style -
Too subtle to suspect
By natures this side Naples -
The North cannot detect

The solemn - Torrid - Symbol -
The lips that never lie -
Whose hissing Corals part - and shut -
And Cities - ooze away -

静かな − 火山の − 生活 −
夜に揺らめくひかり −
闇の深まる時刻になれば
視野を消さなくていい −

音のない − 地震の流儀 −
巧みに隠しとおす
ナポリの側の気質から −
北には見抜けない

厳かな − 灼熱の − 象徴 −
くちびるに嘘はない −
珊瑚がシューっと開いて − 閉じて −
