Ashes denote that Fire was -
Revere the Grayest Pile
For the Departed Creature's sake
That hovered there awhile -

Fire exists the first in light
And then consolidates
Only the Chemist can disclose
Into what Carbonates -

灰は火のあった証拠 −
積み上げた白に畏敬を
旅に出たものがそこで
しばらく揺らめいた −

火はまず光のなかに
そして固形化する
解き明かせるのは化学者だけ

The last Night that She lived
It was a Common Night
Except the Dying - this to Us
Made Nature different

We noticed smallest things -
Things overlooked before
By this great light opon our minds
Italicized - as 'twere.

As We went out and in
Between Her final Room
And Rooms where Those to be alive
Tomorrow, were, a Blame

That others could exist
While She must finish quite
A Jealousy for Her arose
So nearly infinite -

We waited while She passed -
It was a narrow time -
Too jostled were Our Souls to speak
At length the notice came.

She mentioned, and forgot -
Then lightly as a Reed
Bent to the Water, struggled scarce -
Consented, and was dead -

And We - We placed the Hair -
And drew the Head erect -
And then an awful leisure was
Belief to regulate -

彼女が生きた最後の夜
それはありふれた夜で
近づく死が − 私たちの
景色を変えただけ

些細なことに気づいた −
以前なら見過ごしていた
この強い光が心に差して
イタリック体に − 見せた.

出たり入ったりした
彼女の最期の部屋と
生きていく人達の部屋
明日が，負い目に，なった

ここにいられること
命の絶える目の前で
彼女に嫉妬していた
止めどないくらいに −

息が絶えるのを待った −
わずかな時間に私たち −
こころ揺さぶられ言葉もなく
ついにその時がきた．

言いかけて，そして忘れて −
水にかがみこむ葦の
軽やかさで，一瞬の抵抗のあと −
身をまかせ，そして死んだ −

私たちは − 髪をととのえて −
頭をまっすぐに直し −
あとは気の遠くなる時間

A Travelling Flake of Snow
Across a Barn or through a Rut
Debates if it will go -
A Narrow Wind complains all Day
How some one treated him
Nature, like Us is sometimes caught
Without her Diadem -

空は低俗 − 雲は卑屈．
雪のかけらが旅をして
納屋を越え，溝に沿い
行こうか悩んでいる −
狭量な風は愚痴に明け暮れ
こんな酷い目にあったとか
自然も，不意打ちに遭うことはある

Has simultaneous come.
The lower metres of the Year
When Nature's laugh is done
The Revelations of the Book
Whose Genesis was June.
Appropriate Creatures to her change
The Typic Mother sends
As Accent fades to interval
With separating Friends
Till what we speculate, has been
And thoughts we will not show
More intimate with us become
Than Persons, that we know.

蜂のつぶやきは，止み
別のつぶやきが
後から，先触れに，
間を置かずに来る．
韻律の冷えこむ季節
自然の笑い声も尽き
聖書の黙示録
創世記は六月．
予型の母が変化に合わせ
送りこんだ適任者
声音が間遠に薄れ
別れていく友達
そうだと，思っていた事と
明かしはしない胸の内を
身近に感じはじめる

From Eminence remote
Drives ponderous perpendicular
His figure intimate -
The terror of the Children
The merriment of men
Depositing his Thunder
He hoists abroad again -
A Bomb opon the Ceiling
Is an improving thing -
It keeps the nerves progressive
Conjecture flourishing -
Too dear the Summer evening
Without discreet alarm -
Supplied by Entomology
With it's remaining charm

こんな夜にはかぶと虫が集う −
はるかの高みから
一直線に駆け降りる
見慣れた装いで −
子ども達は恐怖
大人たちは喝采
雷鳴を落として
引き上げていく −
天井に爆弾
体には良くて −
神経に刺激をあたえ
脳が活性化する −
夏の夕べは甘すぎる
警告音がなくては −
昆虫学の支給品

It is not fit for Table
For Beggar or for Cat -

A Bone has obligations -
A Being has the same -
A Marrowless Assembly
Is culpabler than shame -

But how shall finished Creatures
A function fresh obtain?
Old Nicodemus' Phantom
Confronting us again!

髄のない骨，
目的は何？
食卓に出せない
乞食でも猫でも −

骨には義務が −
人にも義務が −
無髄の会衆は
恥よりも罪 −

でもどうやって閉じた命が
働きを取り戻すのか？
ニコデモ老の亡霊が
またひとを悩ませる！

Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually

Nature took the Day

His is Penury
Not who toils for Freedom
Or for Family
But the Restitution
Of Idolatry.

よそよそしさが過ぎる

合わない，隣にいても
異人種のように −
立ち止まってもその体
緯度のない場所を動く．

元素は変わらず −
宇宙もおなじ
ただ愛が移住した −
なぜだかそうなった −

それ以来，自然は
思い出に明け暮れた
私がどれだけの代償を −
自然は窮迫し
流す汗は自由でも
家族のためでもなく
ふたたび取り戻すため

By Speculation ceded
To Speculation's Son -

The Heaven, in which we hoped to pause
When Discipline was done
Untenable to Logic
But possibly the one -

やらなくてはと思っていたこと
他のことをしていた
自分に向いた努力は
始まってもいない．

探さなくてはと思っていた土地
走る背丈になったら
憶測が譲った
憶測の息子へ −

休みたいと思っていた天国
躾を終えた日に
不合理でも
